Do you have a long-standing health problem? Is a chronic, nagging complaint getting you down? Is one prescription after another just covering up another symptom? Do you have no idea what is really wrong with you?  Functional Medicine may be the answer.

Functional Medicine – the Future of Medicine

Melanie believes Functional medicine is the future of medicine- it asks how and why illness occurs and restores health by assessing the root causes of disease for each individual. It views the body as one whole linked system, not a collection of independent organs divided up by medical specialities.

Most Commonly seen conditions:

  • IBS
  • Reflux/GERD
  • Diverticulitis
  • Constipation/diarrhoea
  • Eczema
  • Acne
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Menopausal problems

Melanie  combines her experience and training  in Functional Medicine, Medical Herbalism, nutrition, and chiropractic to provide a unique holistic approach to finding the root cause of your healthcare problem.

Functional Medicine fits in perfectly with being a Medical Herbalist, I look at the patient as a whole, tackling the root cause of chronic disease using herbs, nutrition, diet, exercise and lifestyle advice. There is no better feeling than seeing a patient get better who has suffered with years from a chronic debilitating complaint, often affecting their and their families lives.

Melanie says, ” I want to get to know my patient, understand their life history and what makes them who they are. I take a detailed history understanding not just their current symptoms but also  their past history and the events that have lead them to their current situation. I look at the interactions between  genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and chronic disease.”  In this way, Functional Medicine looks to improve health and vitality for each individual.”

Melanie is able to order a wide variety of tests to help in her diagnosis, this includes professional genotype analysis;  analysis of over 150 of the best researched genetic markers that can be impacted by diet and lifestyle. This is at the forefront of lifestyle medicine -the ultimate in personalised healthcare.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is redefining disease; it is a patient centred approach that lets the patient address the underlying cause of disease and promote optimal wellness. It addresses the root cause not the symptoms and the practitioners become used to identifying the origins of disease; often finding one condition has many different causes and likewise one cause may result in many different conditions.

Society is experiencing an increase in the number of people who suffer from complex, chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The system of medicine practiced by most doctors is about acute care, the diagnosis and treatment of injury or illness that is of short duration such as appendicitis or a broken leg.

This approach to medicine isn’t able to look at the root cause of chronic disease.

Most doctors are not able to assess the underlying causes of chronic disease and to apply solutions such as nutrition, diet, and exercise to both treat and prevent these illnesses in their patients.

Disease is a process that happens over time. Pre-disease occurs- this is the change from wellness to disease with a gradual increase in poorly functioning bodily systems. Symptoms build up and often by the time the patient presents to us the visible signs of illness are the tip of the iceberg with a whole host of problems invisible below the water.

The aim is to look at an individual’s biological systems find the dysfunction and to correct it through nutrients, herbs and lifestyle changes.

Sidney Baker the founding father of Functional Medicine said; “Naming the disease and blaming the symptoms on the disease does not lead to an understanding of what caused the problem in the first place.”
