Types of arthritis

Whilst there are different types of arthritis, broadly the types fall into two categories, osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthropathies.

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. It is commonly regarded as arthritis that is a result of ‘wear and tear’ and becomes more pronounced as we age. Weight bearing joints such as the hips and knees tend to be affected by osteoarthritis, however, it can affect other parts of the body such as the hands and spine.

Osteoarthritis is caused when the cartilage which protects the ends of bones becomes worn and damaged resulting in theĀ  growth of bony spurs, inflammation and stiffness in the affected joint. As the joint ceases to function correctly it becomes painful and in turn the muscles surrounding the joint tighten.
