Western Medical Acupuncture and how it works

Western medical acupuncture is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture and involves inserting needles into the body. However, it has been adapted to take in current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology and the principles of evidence based medicine.

Practitioners of western medical acupuncture regard it as part of conventional medicine rather than a complete “alternative medical system” and as such they do not adhere to some of the concepts of Chinese acupuncture such as Yin/Yang and circulation of qi. It is principally used by conventional healthcare practitioners, most commonly in primary care.

Helping us to understand how acupuncture works is a great deal of Western scientific research undertaken into pain. One of the particular things we know is that acupuncture causes teh release of natural pain-killing chemicals in our bodies. This suggests that acupuncture helps our bodies heal themselves.
